Trumbo was successful screenwriter until he refused to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee to discuss his involvement with the Communist Party. He and the other members of the Hollywood Ten were then blacklisted for years by the film industry, and Trumbo later served eleven months in federal prison.
