Mary Virginia Terhune, writing under the pen name of Marion Harland, was from an old Southern family distantly related to Captain John Smith. During her long life (1830-1922) she was able to balance motherhood of six children, including Albert Payson Terhune of dog book fame, and the duties of being a minister's wife with a prolific writing career. Harland wrote novels, travel books, biographies, short stories and was a magazine columnist, but is best known for her cookbooks, including the seminal American cookbook "Commonsense in the Household", published in 1871. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 498 pages
