A bound volume of this monthly newspaper, issues of which are stuffed with information about farming practices, livestock sales, advertisements, book reviews, barn, farmhouse and outbuilding plans, new horticultural varieties, many articles about manure and soil amendments, insect pests, farm equipment, editorial opinions about child rearing and other social issues, correspondence, beekeeping, introduction of "the pie plant" (rhubarb) , self-culture advice for young male farmers, garden and farm plans, scientific news, an inordinate number of articles about "ruta bagas" (also referred to as mangold wurzels) , mulberries, silkworm farming and uses for quicklime, household hints, veterinary remedies, maple sugaring, drainage and irrigation, the treatment of hydrophobia (rabies) wounds with a wash of chloride of lime, extracts from other publications, etc. Measures 35 x 24 cm. Calf spine with gilt-stamped leather label over marbled boards. Many lovely woodcuts of farm animals and machinery, including several of the favored Berkshire pig breed. Engraved portrait of the editor/publisher, Jesse Buel at the front of Vol. V. A hand painted full-page engraving of a fanciful horticulturist's coat of arms, studded with rakes, hoes, and vegetables at the front of Vol. 6. Judge Jesse Buel (1778-1839) , established the Cultivator in 1834. He had a large farm west of Albany where he grew many varieties of fruits and vegetables and is credited with helping to popularize the Jonathan Apple variety. Buel was a strong advocate for scientific farming practices, the development of formalized agricultural education and state aid to local agricultural societies. He advocated for the establishment of a New York State agricultural college and State Agricultural Society, was a State Assemblyman, and newspaper founder (Albany Argus). Buel died before the last issue of Vol. 6 was published, but his publication lived on after merging with The Genesee Farmer.
