1897 Salesman's Sample Book for Chas. B. Ayer Company
1 1897 Salesman's Sample Book for Chas. B. Ayer Company
Chicago Chas. B. Ayer Company 1897 Hardcover Good with no dust jacket; Some pages loose, spine cracked in several places, covers worn. The pages are translucent and smell like crayons, which is something we've never seen in a binding. Previous owner name (noted as a primary teacher) on front free endpaper.
A salesman's sample book for four titles published by the Chas. B. Ayer Company of Chicago. Bound in a trifold brown cloth binding are color lithograph covers, pricing for various binding types, sample pages, illustrations and descriptions of various titles, including: 1) Our Darling's ABC Book, compiled by Mrs. Grace Townsend, using ten color lithography to illustrated the pages in standard type and engravings for pages in script. The book is stated as being geared for a primary school audience and uses rhymes to provide object lessons in reading, if not euphony. "U stands for Urchin, Who, out for a tramp, Saw four little Possums While down in the swamp". 2) Talks about Jesus with our Little Boys and Girls, by Mrs. Annie Randall White. Illustrated in color and black and white by H. Hofmann, Prof. Plockhorst and George Hahn. 3) Round the World with Note Book and Camera, Something New for Young People, by Lida Brooks Miller. Illustrated with photographs. 4) Family History of the United States by John Clark Ridpath. Illustrated with engravings and other illustrations. A little sales hyperbole from the description of Our Darling's ABC Book: "These pages cannot convey the beauty and excellence of this little volume, but they can prepare us somewhat for the feast which will be spread before all so fortunate as to possess a copy." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
