1893 Annual Price List, Whitall, Tatum & Co.
1 1893 Annual Price List, Whitall, Tatum & Co.
Philadelphia, New York and Boston Whitall, Tatum & Co. 1893 Hardcover Poor with no dust jacket; Boards heavily worn, backstrip missing 2 inches at head and foot, hinges cracked, pages toned and rippled. Missing pp. 43-50 (show jars) , pp. 151-152 (toothbrushes) , pp. 195-198 (scales and soda sirup signs). Owner name and some notes, including notations about catalog items, updated pricing, and homemade prescriptions.
Tan buckram binding with gilt-ruled leather margins and titles stamped in black on front boards and spine. Owner name (J. W. Wilson) stamped in gilt on front boards. Many engravings and one page of color labels for glass bottles. 1927 TLS letter from National Seal Company about metal seals for glass and tin containers. Whitall, Tatum & Co was a manufacturer of druggists', chemists' and perfumers' glassware at their Millville, New Jersey factory and also made and imported other "druggists' sundries". This trade catalog describes a dizzying array of bottles for all kinds of medicines, colognes, powders, pills, and other products that druggists could personalize with lettered plates and labels, including special bottles for poisons with elaborate pointed stoppers. Many pages devoted to the fancy show bottles and other shop furniture for pharmacy displays. Before the Pure Food Act was passed in 1906, all kinds of elixirs and tonics could be marketed as cure-alls for any number of ailments and this catalog helpfully offers an array of glassware to house Harlem Oils, Genuine Essence, Godfrey's Cordial, and Nerve and Bone Liniment, (on p. 82, right after the glassware for "Promiscuous Articles", and several pages before the bottles for "Coca Wine"). Catalog contains many pages devoted to breast pumps and nipple shields, an unnerving amount of syringes for various orifices, Dr. Healey's Vaginal Irrigators, Godfrey's Chloride of Ammonium Inhaler, Leech Tubes, a number of medical electric devices, suppository moulds, cork presses, draw pulls, and soda fountainware. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 206 pages
