Ruler to Rajpramukh, Nizam VII
4 Ruler to Rajpramukh, Nizam VII
Bombay, India Printed by F. Borton for G. Claridge & Co., Ltd, at Caxton Press for the Financial Adviser to H.E.H. The Nizam of Hyderabad, King Kothi, Hyderabad-Deccan N.D. Softcover Very Good; Covers lightly creased.
Several photos and illustrations. A sympathetic portrait of the last in a long line of Mughal rulers of the princely state of Hyderabad and Berar in India, Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam VII (1911-1967). His monarchic rule was drastically altered by Partition and Indian Independence. He sought to remain ruler of a separate princely state independent of India and Pakistan, but this ended when the Indian government forcibly annexed the territory in 1948 through Operation Polo and tens of thousands of people were killed in the military struggle and Hindu-Muslim violence. Nizam VII survived the upheaval as ruler of this newly annexed state in the Indian Union with a new constitutional role as Rajpramukh, or leader, though his powers and his considerable wealth were severely diminished. This publication appears to have been commissioned by the Nizam or his supporters to present a laudatory portrait of him in his new role. Several passages downplay his wealth and emphasize his piety, frugality and charity. WorldCat only locates seven copies of this title and none offered for sale in the trade at present. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 62 pages
